“A Stone” - Okkervil River

(Neptune Theatre, Seattle, WA, 6.18.11)

So, yes, I readily admit I’ve posted far too much Okkervil River on here over the past few weeks, but in my defense, they are my favorite band in the world and this is my site and I’m still on a weeks long post-concert high from seeing them in concert for the third time.  I was talking with Heather just last night about how they’ve just been absolutely killing it live on this tour, easily the best I’ve ever seen them, and the experience of seeing such a tight, passionate group of musicians pouring their hearts out for a roomful of strangers. At that point, it goes beyond “seeing a show” and becomes an experience.  A spine-tingling one, at that:

“…the seat of artistic delight is between the shoulder blades. That little shiver behind is quite certainly the highest form of emotion that humanity has attained when evolving pure art and pure science. Let us worship the spine and its tingle.”  - Vladimir Nabokov

I post this video, then, in honor of the tingling spine. It was a quiet moment in a show full of louder ones, a moment when Will Sheff took the stage sans band, acoustic guitar in hand, and held a thousand people quiet and captive, hanging on him and his words. That those words just happen to be some of the most fantastic words he’s ever written only added to the power of the moment, this single moment in time when I forgot about everything that weighing me down in this world and was able to lose myself in something much larger than myself.

And I think I believe that
if stones could dream,
they’d dream of being laid
side-by-side,
piece-by-piece,
and turned into a castle
for some towering queen
they’re unable to know.

And when that queen’s daughter
came of age,
I think she’d be lovely
and stubborn and brave,
and suitors would journey
from kingdoms away
just to make themselves known.

And I think that I know
the bitter dismay of a lover who brought
fresh bouquets every day
when she turned him away
to remember some knave
who once gave just one rose,
one day, years ago.

Though no video can capture what it’s truly like to be in any one moment, this amazingly close-up and high-quality one sure comes awfully close. Go ahead, push play and give yourself a few minutes with it; I promise you its worth every single second.
